Odlo Women's Running

The buying guide to running comfortably in any weather and at any temperature

The right running apparel for women determines whether a run feels effortless or exhausting. Three factors matter most: the right fabric, a well-thought-out layering system, and a fit that moves with you. Moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics — typically polyester-elastane blends — pull sweat away from your skin and dry quickly, keeping you comfortable from the first kilometre to the last. In cooler conditions, a layered approach pays off: a close-fitting base layer, a performance mid layer, and a wind- and water-resistant running jacket work together to manage your body temperature. The better your layers work in combination, the more enjoyable your run.

What running apparel do you need at different temperatures?

Choosing your running kit by temperature makes a real difference to your comfort and performance. Above 15°C, a lightweight, breathable running top in moisture-wicking polyester and a short tight or running shorts is usually enough. Between 5°C and 15°C, opt for a full-length running tight combined with a long-sleeve top. Below 5°C, switch to thermal tights with a brushed inner lining, add a mid layer, and top it with a wind- and water-resistant running jacket. Reflective detailing on your kit is essential for running in low-light conditions, which become more frequent in autumn and winter.

How tight should running tights fit?

Running tights should be snug enough to eliminate chafing and bunching, but loose enough to allow a full range of motion. Light compression is beneficial on longer runs — it stabilises the muscles and can reduce fatigue. Look for a wide, adjustable waistband that sits securely without digging in, and a 4-way stretch fabric that adapts to every stride. A good rule of thumb: your tights should feel like a second skin without pinching or restricting movement. Laser-cut ventilation zones at the thighs can help regulate temperature during high-intensity sessions.

What makes a good running jacket?

A high-quality running jacket protects against wind and rain without sacrificing breathability. If you plan to wear it in wet conditions, look for a waterproof rating of at least 10,000mm water column — fully sealed seams and a waterproof zip add reliable protection in heavy rain. At the same time, a high moisture vapour permeability (MVP) rating ensures sweat can escape, preventing overheating. A running-specific hood with a rain visor, all-around reflectivity and a chest pocket are practical details that earn their place over many kilometres.

What should you wear under running tights and base layers?

Under running tights or shorts, choose a seamless, moisture-wicking sports brief that won't create pressure points and moves with every stride. For women, a well-fitting sports bra is important: for high-intensity sessions, a high-impact sports bra with adjustable straps, a wide underband and good moisture management is the right choice. For tops and bottoms, a seamless construction eliminates friction and goes unnoticed during a run. Avoid cotton as a base layer — it retains moisture and can cause irritation over distance.

What running apparel works best in winter?

Winter running calls for warmth without excessive sweating. Thermal tights with a brushed fleece lining trap body heat while actively wicking moisture away from the skin. Insulated running jackets with a windproof outer layer and a soft fleece interior are ideal when temperatures drop to or below freezing. Complete your outfit with a running-specific hat made from quick-drying fabric — Odlo's Polyknit dry fast and sit comfortably under a jacket hood. Reflective details on your jacket and tights improve visibility during the shorter days of winter. Start your run feeling slightly warm rather than already hot — your body temperature will rise quickly once you're moving, and you can adapt your layers accordingly.
