Insulating mid layers crafted for performance, warmth and comfort.
Made for
A mid layer is the critical piece between your base layer and outer shell – it insulates, moves moisture away from the body, and needs to let you move freely. For women's long-sleeve mid layers, two materials lead the way: fleece for maximum warmth at minimal weight, and technical stretch fabric for high-intensity activities. Three factors determine the right choice: your planned activity level, the outside temperature, and whether you'll wear the piece solo or as part of a full layering system.
A mid layer is an insulating piece worn between a close-fitting base layer and a wind- or weatherproof outer jacket. For women, a long-sleeve mid layer serves several roles at once: it traps body heat, wicks moisture away as your effort level changes, and keeps your temperature stable when conditions shift. Whether you're hiking, skiing or running on a cold day, it's the layer that bridges comfort and performance. Choose one with a zip opening and you'll gain instant ventilation control as your heart rate climbs.
Polyester fleece is the classic mid-layer material: lightweight, quick-drying, shape-retaining and warm for its weight. Odlo's women's fleece mid layers use brushed interiors that reduce friction and improve comfort against the skin. For high-intensity activities like running or ski touring, a technical stretch fabric with active moisture management is a stronger choice – it keeps you warm without trapping sweat. If you want both in one piece, look for a hybrid construction with fleece inside and stretch fabric on the outside.
The three-layer principle that Odlo has built on since 1986 places the mid layer as the active insulating piece. It sits over a close-fitting base layer, which moves moisture directly away from the skin. A wind- or waterproof outer layer follows when conditions demand it. For women's mid layers, the fit matters: it should sit close to the body without restricting movement, since freedom of motion is essential when hiking or running. A half-zip lets you ventilate quickly on the uphill without having to remove the layer entirely.
For hiking in cold conditions, look for a balanced combination of warmth and breathability. Odlo's fleece mid layers with brushed interiors and a turtleneck collar protect your neck reliably without needing an extra scarf. Stretch fleece styles with a quarter-zip or half-zip adapt easily to changing conditions – especially useful when temperatures fluctuate on longer hikes. Some styles also feature reflective detailing, which adds visibility on early-morning starts or autumn evening walks.
Synthetic mid layers in polyester can be machine washed at 40°C – turn them inside out first to protect technical properties and any prints. Skip the fabric softener: it settles into the fibres and degrades the moisture-wicking performance of the fabric. Air drying gives the best results and the longest lifespan, since high heat can damage performance fibres. Between sessions, airing the garment out is often enough to refresh it – this also extends the life of the piece. For more details, explore our care guide.
