Odlo Base Layers for women

The buying guide to finding women's base layers that truly perform in the cold

A great base layer isn't just about comfort — it's the foundation of your performance in the cold. As the layer closest to your skin, it needs to move moisture away quickly, hold your body temperature steady, and stay comfortable through hours of activity. Three factors determine the right choice: the material that suits your activity (Merino wool or synthetic), the warmth level that matches the conditions you'll face, and a close-enough fit that doesn't restrict movement.

How do I choose the right Odlo base layer for the temperature conditions?

Odlo's TCS (Temperature Control System) assigns every base layer to a specific temperature zone, making it easy to match your kit to your conditions. For moderate cold and active pursuits like ski touring or trail running, the Warm range is built for a comfort range of −10 °C to +5 °C. If you're spending long days on the mountain in genuinely harsh conditions, the X-Warm selection covers a comfort range of −20 °C to −5 °C and is designed for the coldest days on the slopes. For high-intensity sport where overheating is a bigger risk than the cold, choose the Light range (comfort range: +5 °C to +20 °C) — its faster moisture release prevents heat build-up when you're working hard. Finally, the X-Light range is designed for hottest conditions, typically between +15°C and +25°C and for high-intensity activities where the body generates significant heat and staying dry is the main priority. Always base your decision on the activity and intensity level, not just the forecast temperature.

What's the difference between Merino and synthetic base layers at Odlo?

Merino base layers regulate body temperature naturally: the wool fibres absorb moisture without feeling wet against the skin, then release it into the air. That makes them ideal for long days with varied intensity — hiking, ski touring, or any adventure where you alternate between effort and rest. Odlo's Merino range covers 160 g/m², 200 g/m², and 260 g/m² weights, spanning everything from light layers for active days in milder weather to extra-warm options for deep winter cold. Synthetic thermal base layers dry significantly faster and handle more frequent washing, making them the go-to for high-sweat disciplines like cross-country skiing and intense training. If you can't decide, Odlo's Seamless Performance Wool base layers — a blend of Merino and nylon — give you the natural softness of wool alongside the quick-dry performance of synthetic fibres.

How do I care for my Odlo base layers to keep them performing?

Synthetic Odlo base layers can go in the washing machine at 40 °C — always turn them inside out first to protect any prints and technical finishes. Avoid fabric softener at all costs: it blocks the fibres and permanently reduces moisture-wicking performance. Merino base layers need a little more care: use a wool-specific detergent, wash at a maximum of 30 °C on a delicate cycle, and lay them flat to dry so the fibres hold their shape. Because Merino naturally resists odour, you can often air your base layer out between sessions rather than washing it after every use — a habit that extends both the life of the garment and its technical properties.

When should I choose a slim fit and when a fitted cut?

Odlo women's base layers come in two cuts: Slim and Fitted. The Slim cut sits directly against the skin to maximise moisture transfer and heat retention — it's the right choice when you're wearing a mid layer or shell on top. If you want a slightly looser feel, size up from your usual size. The Fitted cut is body-close but not skin-tight, making it a better option when you want to wear the base layer on its own. Whatever cut you choose, make sure the base layer doesn't bunch under your other layers — creases reduce how efficiently it can transfer warmth and moisture.

Why are Odlo base layers a strong choice for women who ski?

Skiers ask more of their base layers than almost any other athlete: stillness at the chairlift, intense effort on the run, and everything in between — all day long. Odlo's Warm-zone base layers in stretchy polyester include HeiQ Mint technology to neutralise odour and keep you feeling fresh through a full ski day, while delivering the thermal insulation needed down to −15 °C. For the coldest days on the mountain, I-Thermic technology offers an integrated heating system you control from your smartphone, targeting warmth precisely where your body needs it most. If you prefer natural materials, a 200 g/m² or 260 g/m² Merino base layer delivers natural thermoregulation that adapts to both active runs and the slow warmth of the après-ski ritual.
