merino t-shirt summer

Merino in summer explained

Wool might seem like an odd choice for summer, but it's just the opposite. It’s cool, lightweight, odour resistant and more. Let’s look at the three main reasons why merino is a standout in the heat.

One of the most frequent questions that lands on our desks is about wearing wool in summer. The forecasts are showing sun. The highs are very high. People are looking for lightweight fabrics to work out in – anything that helps them beat the heat.

There are several reasons why we recommend our Performance Wool products for these circumstances, be it for trail running, hiking, cycling or every day. Here are the top three.

1. It adapts to the world around it

Merino adapts to body temp and has been shown to keep you cool as your core temperature rises and retain heat when it falls. Some people call this thermoregulation. We call it magic.

At 115 grams per square metre – a perfect summer fabric weight – our Performance Wool X-Alp tee works great every day. But where it really shines is when you’re running and the weather changes or you start on a long descent after an arduous climb. Notice how merino adapts. Winter or summer, opt for the right weight, and it’s never too hot, never too cold and somehow always feels right at home right where it is.

2. Wool doesn't smell

Be it for running or bike-packing, we’re always quick to suggest merino tees and even long sleeves for warm weather. Why?

The long and short of it is, merino is a naturally antibacterial fabric. This means it doesn’t trap scents easily. You can use it for repeated high-intensity efforts without a pressing need to wash it, even in the summer. This odour resistance makes merino that much more usable in active contexts and in the heat. Another good reason to add it to your kit rotation.

3. It breathes beautifully

Merino is undeniably one of the most comfortable fibres out there. At a summer weight (130 grams per square metre or less), it’s also incredibly light and airy (especially our Nuyarn® versions). The benefits for high-heart rate and warm-weather contexts are obvious.

If you’re still not convinced, check out our piece on the best running shirts for summer or simply try out some merino for everyday comfort. Even in the heat, the results will truly amaze.
