Odlo Base Layers for men

The buying guide to staying comfortable whatever the conditions throw at you

Your base layer is the foundation of every layering system and the most important piece you wear. It moves moisture away from your skin, regulates your body temperature and determines how comfortable you feel on the trail, the cross-country track or the ski slope. When choosing Odlo men's base layers, three factors matter most: the material (Merino or synthetic), the thermal weight suited to your activity and the conditions, and the fit, which needs to balance freedom of movement with a close-to-skin feel.

How do I choose the right Odlo base layer for my activity?

The right choice depends on intensity, temperature and sport. For high-output activities like running or ski touring in milder conditions, a lightweight synthetic base layer is the smart pick: it dries quickly, wicks sweat reliably and sits feather-light on your skin. For hiking in the cold or moderate winter sports like cross-country skiing, a 200 g/m² Merino option delivers natural temperature regulation alongside genuine breathability. In extreme cold, on the slopes or at altitude, X-Warm styles with targeted insulation at the most cold-sensitive areas of the body offer maximum protection. Odlo divides its range into four temperature zones: X-Light (comfort zone +15 °C to +25 °C), Light (+5 °C to +20 °C), Warm (−10 °C to +5 °C) and X-Warm (−20 °C to −5 °C).

What's the difference between synthetic base layers and Merino base layers?

Synthetic Odlo base layers impress with ultra-fast drying times, high durability and an exceptionally light feel against the skin: ideal for intense sports where you're working up a real sweat. Merino wool, on the other hand, regulates temperature naturally, resists odours and can be worn multiple times before it needs washing. If you're out for multi-day trips or you want base layers that stay fresh between washes, Merino is the obvious choice. Both materials have their strengths — what matters most is your primary activity and the conditions you'll face.

What Odlo technologies are built into men's base layers?

Odlo has been engineering base layers since 1946 and has pioneered several landmark technologies along the way. I-Thermic is an intelligent heating system that analyses your body heat and delivers warmth precisely where you need it most, without compromising comfort or wearability. Seamless construction eliminates seams at friction points for a smooth, unrestricted fit during movement. Performance Wool concepts blend Merino with synthetic fibres for faster dry times than pure Merino — a clear advantage in changeable conditions during cross-country skiing or ski touring.

How should I wash Odlo base layers?

Synthetic Odlo base layers can go straight in the machine at 40°C. Turn them inside out first to protect any technical treatments. The one thing to always avoid is fabric softener: it coats the fibres with a residue that permanently degrades moisture-wicking performance. For Merino base layers, use a wool-specific detergent, wash at a maximum of 30°C on a delicate cycle or by hand, and reshape before laying flat to air dry. For both materials, skip the tumble dryer — high heat damages performance fibres and shortens the life of your kit.

How should Odlo base layers fit?

An Odlo base layer for running or skiing works best when it sits close to the body. Odlo offers two cuts: Slim Fit sits directly against the skin for maximum moisture transport and thermal performance. Fitted has a little more room and suits anyone who prefers a slightly less snug feel. As a rule of thumb, size up in Slim Fit styles if you want a touch more freedom of movement. Fit isn't just about comfort — it directly affects how well the base layer manages moisture and warmth. A cut that's too loose reduces the efficiency of both.
