80 Years Strong

The Original Product Explorers

From 1946 to today, Odlo’s story has been defined by an enduring pioneering spirit - one driven by curiosity, shaped by environment and committed to elevating human potential and enjoyment in the outdoors.

Born in Norway and refined through Swiss precision, Odlo has never chased trends. Instead, it has followed a continuous journey of firsts - ideas that solved real problems and went on to redefine performance, generation after generation.

As we celebrate our 80th anniversary, this story is not just about where we came from, but also why we continue to create. Discover how it all began and how the mindset of our founder still guides everything we do today.

Born in Norway

Odlo was founded in Norway in 1946 by Odd Roar Lofterød, in a landscape defined by harsh winters, vast terrain and an uncompromising relationship with nature. These conditions were not simply a backdrop. They shaped how the brand thought, observed and created. From the start, Odlo existed to solve real problems outdoors. Clothing needed to work with the body, support movement and perform reliably in demanding environments. Function was never optional. It was the foundation.

A Fabric Pioneer

Odd Roar Lofterød was born in Norway in 1915 and grew up during a period marked by war and unemployment. Opportunities were limited, but ideas were not. Instead of waiting for work to find him, he sought it out, placing a simple advertisement that read “Worker available for 100 crowns.” It led him to a factory producing machinery for the clothing industry, where he began to understand the mechanics behind fabric, knitting and construction. That experience changed everything. Using the technical knowledge he gained, Odd went on to establish his own company. To get started, he purchased his first knitting and sewing machines from his former employer and made the deliberate decision to trademark the Odlo name worldwide. From the outset, he was thinking beyond the moment and building with intent. Innovation wasn’t planned. It was instinct. As he often reminded himself and others “Always make sure you’re one step ahead.” That belief became more than a saying. It shaped a way of thinking that still defines Odlo today.

“Always make sure you’re one step ahead.”

A Breakthrough Born from Performance

The period after the war was one of limitation, with materials in short supply. Early on, Odd began manufacturing underwear, working with what was available and refining his understanding of next-to-skin comfort. But the defining turning point came through sport and family. When Odd’s son began training with the Norwegian junior speed skating team, the cold quickly exposed the limits of existing gear. Watching athletes struggle through long winter sessions, Odd recognised a problem that he was eager to solve. Drawing on his experience with fabrics and construction, he created a new kind of training suit using Helanca fibre, a lightweight synthetic yarn that offered stretch, warmth and freedom of movement in extreme cold. When his son wore it to a training camp, the response was immediate. Teammates noticed the difference, and soon, top athletes were asking for the same solution. What began as a practical response to a single need became a glimpse of something larger: performance apparel built to support the body first and unlock potential from there. Designed from the inside out.

A Series of Firsts

The years that followed were defined by purposeful firsts. From cross‑country race suits to fully synthetic base layers, Odlo continued to expand what performance apparel could achieve. Innovations developed to meet real demands were quickly embraced by elite athletes and became part of the highest levels of competition. In 1963, Odd Roar Lofterød introduced a warm, stretchy, high‑performance suit for cross‑country skiers and speed skaters, developed using Helanca synthetic fibre. Just one year later, the Norwegian Olympic team wore the revolutionary suits at the 1964 Winter Games in Innsbruck. By the time the Winter Games reached Sapporo in 1972, more than 25 national teams were racing in Odlo Thermic, the world’s first fully synthetic base layer. Designed to keep athletes dry and comfortable in extreme cold, it marked a breakthrough in next‑to‑skin performance. This was a time before sponsorship. Athletes and teams chose Odlo and paid out of their own pockets to compete in its apparel. Performance was the proof. These were not ideas shaped by the moment. They were foundations built to last.

From Father to Son. From Norway to Switzerland.

In 1979, leadership passed from founder Odd Roar Lofterød to his son, Odd Roar Lofterød Junior, marking a natural evolution of the brand. The philosophy remained unchanged, but the way it was applied grew more personal, more precise and more deeply connected to athletes themselves. Those who worked closely with Odd Roar Junior remember a leader defined by intelligence, warmth and a genuine desire to help athletes perform at their very best. He believed no two athletes were the same, and product design reflected that belief. Odd Roar Junior worked closely with the Norwegian cross‑country ski team to create bespoke competition and training apparel tailored to each individual athlete. Fit, layering and movement were refined with meticulous attention to detail, from inner linings to reinforced zones and even colour choices. Anette Bøe was among those athletes, experiencing first‑hand a design approach where performance was treated as deeply individual. “Odd cared deeply about people and performance. Everything he designed was made to help us give our very best.” Anette Bøe, Legendary Norwegian athlete In 1986, Odlo established its home in Switzerland. Not as a departure from its Norwegian roots, but as an extension of them. A place known for precision, craftsmanship and long‑term thinking offered the ideal environment to deepen and evolve the brand’s approach to performance. The pioneering mindset endured. The perspective expanded.

SS26 half width tout grid 80 Years Strong blog - An Idea Becomes a System

An Idea Becomes a System

Just one year later, a defining principle was formalised. In 1987, Odlo introduced the Athletic Clothing System - more commonly known as the three‑layer principle. For the first time, performance apparel was approached as a complete system rather than individual pieces. A first layer to manage moisture next to the skin. A second layer to regulate body temperature. A third layer to protect against wind and weather. It was the natural evolution of everything Odlo stood for. A philosophy given structure. Performance, built from the inside out.

SS26 half width tout grid 80 Years Strong blog - The Evolution of Innovation

From the Inside Out. Still.

Over the years, that philosophy continued to drive meaningful progress. From expanding into running and outdoor categories, to introducing advanced fabric technologies like odour‑reducing fibres and taking early steps in sustainability and responsibility - each milestone reflected a commitment to innovation with purpose. Today, from the inside out remains central to how Odlo designs. Eight decades of base layer expertise have shaped a clear understanding: comfort starts next to the skin. Every product begins with the human experience in mind. How it feels. How it moves. How it manages temperature. How it supports presence in the outdoors. Design does not stop at a single layer. Each outer layer builds on what lies beneath, either protecting it or enhancing it, creating harmony between the layers. Every piece works individually, but performs best together. This approach allows athletes and outdoor enthusiasts to stay focused on the experience, not the equipment. Because when clothing works seamlessly with the body, nothing stands between you and fully experiencing the joy of the outdoors. From the inside out is not just how Odlo builds products. It is how the brand understands performance.

“Heritage isn’t what we were.  It’s the expertise that drives what comes next.”

Kilian Breuer, Odlo Chief Product Officer
