Insulating layers crafted for performance, warmth and comfort.
Made for
A men's mid layer is the critical layer between your base layer and outer shell: it retains warmth, drives moisture outward and allows complete freedom of movement. When buying, three factors matter most — the right material for your activity, the fit that works within your layering system, and the warmth level that suits the temperature ranges of your sport. Odlo designs mid layers for running, skiing, hiking and Nordic sports, each built around a clear thermal purpose.
A men's mid layer is the second layer in a three-layer system: it sits over the base layer, captures body heat, moves moisture away from the skin and provides insulation. During active sport, a mid layer must be breathable enough that it doesn't cause overheating when the pace changes. The right choice depends on your activity: for fast-paced trail running, a lightweight, stretchy long-sleeve half-zip works best, while a ski mid layer calls for a fleece or wool-based design that delivers the right thermal buffer. The three-layer principle was developed by Odlo and remains the foundation of every high-performance layering system today.
For high-intensity activities like running or ski touring, synthetic mid layers made from polyester or polyester-elastane blends perform best: they dry quickly, stretch with every movement and reliably transport sweat away from the body. Odlo fleece mid layers in soft microfleece deliver excellent warmth at low weight and work particularly well as ski mid layers or for cooler hiking days. If you're planning multi-day routes or want a long-sleeve top with natural temperature regulation, choose a Merino mid layer: 200 g/m² Merino provides comfortable warmth and natural odour resistance, making it ideal for activities where you'll wear the piece for several consecutive days.
A half-zip mid layer lets you control ventilation actively: when pace picks up during a run or on the slopes and body heat builds, you can open the zip to let in targeted airflow. A crewneck is the right choice when you're working at a consistent moderate effort and don't expect many temperature swings. Odlo crewneck mid layers also have a clean, versatile look that makes them wearable for everyday use. In variable conditions — a ski mid layer on the mountain or a hiking day in shifting weather — the half-zip is the more adaptable option.
A good men's technical long sleeve in winter needs to do three things at once: retain warmth, transport moisture and maintain freedom of movement. For activities done by cold temperature (from −10 °C to +5 °C) such as cross-country skiing or ski touring, the Warm range of mid layers provide enough insulation without compromising breathability. Synthetic fleece mid layers with a double-layer construction — outer fleece for warmth, inner microgrid for airflow — are particularly effective in these conditions. Additionally, Ceramiwarm technology, which harnesses ceramic thermal properties, creates a stable microclimate directly against the body.
Synthetic long sleeves and fleece mid layers made from polyester can be machine washed at 40 °C — ideally inside out to protect technical surface structures. Always avoid fabric softener, as it permanently damages the moisture-wicking properties of the fabric. Merino-based mid layers — such as those made from 200 g/m² Merino wool — should be washed gently at a maximum of 30 °C using a wool-specific detergent, ideally on a delicates or hand-wash cycle. For full guidance on how to care for your Odlo garments, see our care guide. Merino can be aired out between uses and therefore needs washing less frequently. Avoid the tumble dryer for all mid layer styles; air drying flat preserves both shape and performance for longest.
